Colostrum is consumed in liquid or powder form as a food supplement.
In this article, we want to give you an overview of the different forms in which colostrum is available, how they differ and what advantages they have in terms of suitability for everyday use, handling and storage.
Whichever form you choose, colostrum provides you with the best possible nutritional supplement.
Colostrum processing – from raw material to finished product
Colostrum is the first milk of mammals. It serves to help the newborn organism get off to a successful start in life with a wealth of bioactive nutrients. As the first milk of cows is 99% identical to human first milk in terms of the composition of its ingredients, it is also an excellent food for humans to use as a nutrient supplement in everyday life*.
(*Unfortunately, as a manufacturer/distributor of foodstuffs, we are prohibited from making healing statements regarding the effects of colostrum products on humans. We must therefore refer to worldwide medical publications and studies or to the relevant specialist literature).
Step 1: Removal of fat and casein
But first a few steps are necessary in the processing. Colostrum is naturally liquid, but much thicker than normal milk. To make the valuable raw material edible and extend its shelf life, fat and casein are separated out. This is because these are less easily digestible and the fat can become rancid over time. The result of this processing step is a clear liquid serum.
Step 2: Cold filtration
In order to obtain liquid colostrum in a storable form, the first milk is first sterilized. This removes microorganisms from the product and prevents the serum from spoiling over time. Sometimes the raw material is also pasteurized, i.e. made sterile through the application of heat. However, this process can damage some of the ingredients. At armacura® we therefore rely on a highly specialized process in which sterilization takes place without the use of heat.
Step 3: Freeze-drying
Colostrum is also processed into powder to increase its shelf life even further and to obtain a practical dry product. Here too, there are manufacturers who use heat for this process, in which the water is removed from the liquid colostrum. At armacura®, high temperatures are also avoided in this step to protect the ingredients. Our special freeze-drying process is the gentlest method of obtaining colostrum powder.
Colostrum liquid, powder or combined formula
In terms of nutrient content, the different forms of colostrum are absolutely equivalent. Nevertheless, the individual forms have different advantages.
Colostrum liquid – the serum for everyday use
Liquid colostrum is appreciated by many people because it is the form that comes closest to the natural raw material. After all, the raw material only undergoes two processing steps. Liquids are also absorbed more quickly by the body.
Colostrum liquid can be easily integrated into the daily routine. Especially with pre-portioned products – such as armacura® Colostrum Serum, which is supplied in 6 ml ampoules – handling is extremely easy. The serum can be drunk directly. However, it can also be stirred into cool drinks or food, e.g. fruit juice, yoghurt or muesli.
As already mentioned, liquid and powdered colostrum should not be exposed to high temperatures.
Colostrum as powder (loose)
Colostrum is most commonly used in its dehydrated form, i.e. as a powder. It has a longer shelf life and also has practical advantages. By nature, the powder has its own, slightly creamy taste, which can also be easily combined with other flavors.
armacura® Colostrum powder ginger-lemon
With the colostrum powder from armacura®, we have combined the full nutritional power with an invigorating taste. With real ginger powder and a subtle citrus note, the result is a revitalizing drink that is practical and versatile to use.
armacura® Colostrum Immune Direct Sticks
Our dosage form as direct sticks is primarily aimed at suitability for everyday use. The contents of the practical sticks are pre-portioned and are used without mixing – the powder melts directly on the tongue.
On the other hand, an innovative formula has been developed especially for challenging times:
Colostrum as a powder in capsules
Colostrum is also very popular in capsule form. The powder is filled into capsules made from gelatine or a plant-based alternative.
Many people appreciate the fact that the ingredients pass through the mouth and directly into the stomach.
After all, preferences and tastes are known to vary. Although colostrum has a mild, creamy and often slightly sweet taste, some people don’t like the slightly tart or even whey-like flavors – especially with powder, which has an even more concentrated taste. In this case, the capsules are of course ideal.
The benefits of colostrum capsules at a glance:
- Easy to dose
- Longer shelf life
- Practical for traveling or on the go
- Tasteless intake
Colostrum in a combined formula
Although colostrum in powder form is an unsurpassed source of nutrients, it can also be combined with other ingredients.
Inspiration for your everyday life
Although the different forms of colostrum are not limited to certain everyday situations, this overview provides a practical guide:
| Everyday situation | Frequently suitable form | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed morning routine | Liquid serum | Fast, without preparation |
| Flexible kitchen, breakfast at home | Powder | Versatile in drinks or dishes |
| On the road a lot and little time, with a preference for taste | Direct sticks | Portioned, without preparation |
| Fast intake without any taste effect | Capsules | Neutral and uncomplicated |
Conclusion on liquid colostrum, powder and direct sticks
Colostrum is now available in several forms to meet different needs: liquid as a quick routine, powder as a flexible kitchen solution, capsules as a tasteless variant and direct sticks as an on-the-go format.
